Benefits of a Charitable Bequest

A charitable bequest to the American Thyroid Association in your will or living trust offers many benefits for you and the ATA
- Plain language. The language required for your will or trust are simple and direct.
- Rescindable. Your gift occurs after your lifetime; therefore, you can alter your bequest at any time.
- A variety of options. The bequest can be structured in several ways: to donate a specific item or amount of money, to make the gift event contingent, or to leave the ATA a percentage of your estate.
- Benefit for your heirs. There is an estate tax1 charitable deduction for the gift's full value.

Specific Bequest
“I give to the American Thyroid Association, whose Headquarters’ Office is presently located at 6066 Leesburg Pike, Suite 550, Falls Church, VA 22041, [the sum of ________ ($________) or describe property] to be used for general purposes.”*

Residual Bequest
I give to the American Thyroid Association, whose Headquarters’ Office is presently located at 6066 Leesburg Pike, Suite 550, Falls Church, VA 22041, [all or ____ percent (____%)] of the rest, residue and remainder of [my or the trust] estate, to be used for general purposes.”*
GIFTS THROUGH A TRUST
Upon the death of the [Recipient], the Trustee(s) shall distribute [all, amount, or percentage] of the then principal and income of the Trust (other than any amount due the Recipient or the Recipient’s estate under the provisions above) to the American Thyroid Association, whose Headquarters’ Office is presently located at 6066 Leesburg Pike, Suite 550, Falls Church, VA 22041, (hereinafter referred to as “the Charitable Organization”) to be used for general purposes.*
If the “Charitable Organization” is not an organization described in sections 170 (c) and 2055 (a) of the Code at the time when any principal or income of the Trust is to be distributed to it, then the Trustee(s) shall distribute such principal or income to such one or more organizations described in sections 170 (c) and 2055(a) as the Trustee(s) shall select in its sole discretion.
* You may designate the funds to be used for the general purposes of the American Thyroid Association, as in the above examples, or may direct that funds be used for a specific purpose, such as research. If you have questions about other restrictions on gifts, please contact the ATA.
