(PHOENIX)—David S. Cooper, MD, of Baltimore, is the new president of the American Thyroid Association (ATA), the leading professional society of physicians and researchers who specialize in diseases of the thyroid gland.  He will serve a one-year term from 2006 – 2007.

“I’m honored to have been selected to be the president of the world’s foremost organization representing health care professionals and researchers who are dedicated to benefiting patients with thyroid disease,” said Dr. Cooper. “I hope that in the coming year that the ATA’s objectives will be furthered by an increase in thyroid research funding, enhanced patient education, and improved relationships with other professional groups around the world.”

Dr. Cooper is the Director of the Division of Endocrinology at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and is Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

He serves as an Editor-In-Chief for Endocrinology for Up-to-Date, as a Contributing Editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association, and as the Deputy Editor of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.  He also serves on the ABIM Subspecialty Board for Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes.

A member of the ATA for 25 years, Dr. Cooper is the immediate past treasurer of the ATA, has served on the ATA Council, and has chaired the Public Health, Publications, and Clinical Affairs Committees. He is also chair of the ATA task force that recently developed new evidence-based guidelines for the management of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer.  He is the recipient of the ATA’s 2005 Distinguished Service Award.

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Cooper completed his internal medicine residency at Barnes Hospital/Washington University and his fellowship training in endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The American Thyroid Association is a nonprofit professional medical society composed of physicians and scientists dedicated to enhancing the understanding of thyroid physiology and pathophysiology, improving diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases, and promoting the education of physicians, patients, and the public about thyroid disorders. The ATA’s web site, www.thyroid.org, provides professional and patient resources, such as treatment guidelines, thyroid health brochures in English and Spanish, and access to Friends of the ATA, a patient-oriented service providing access to the latest in thyroid health information.
