Jayne Franklyn, MD, PhD, Receives American Thyroid Association’s 2006 Paul Starr Award


(PHOENIX)— Jayne Franklyn, MD, PhD, of the United Kingdom (UK), is the recipient of the American Thyroid Association’s (ATA) 2006 Paul Starr Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to clinical thyroidology. As part of this prestigious award, she presented a major lecture, “Causes and consequences of thyroid disorders,” on Oct. 14, 2006, during the ATA’s 77th Annual Meeting in Phoenix, where she also received the award.

The award is supported by ATA member Boris Catz, MD, and, in part, by an unrestricted educational grant from King Pharmaceuticals.

Currently, Dr. Franklyn is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Birmingham and Consultant Endocrinologist at the University Hospital in Birmingham, UK. She is also Associate Dean for the Graduate School of the Medical School of Birmingham University.

Throughout her research career, Dr. Franklyn has maintained a strong interest not only in the pathogenesis of thyroid diseases and thyroid hormone action but also in the management of thyroid disorders and their long-term consequences in terms of morbidity and mortality. In addition, Dr. Franklyn has developed large programs of laboratory and clinical research focusing on the pathogenesis of thyroid cancer and autoimmune thyroid disease and the effects of subclinical thyroid dysfunction.

Dr. Franklyn has received numerous awards and honors, including appointment as Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, the award of the Royal College of Physicians Goulstonian Lectureship, the Society for Endocrinology Medal Lectureship, an International Congress of Endocrinology Plenary Lectureship, and an ATA Clinical Keynote Lecture. She is also Senior Editor of Clinical Endocrinology, a member of the Clinical Committee of the UK Society for Endocrinology, and chair of the UK National Training Committee for endocrinology and diabetes. She sits on the Clinical Interview Panel of the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council College of Experts.

She also is an active contributor to endocrinology in the United States through membership in the ATA’s Public Health Committee and The Endocrine Society’s Clinical Research Committee.
