CDC and ATA Collaborate on Thyroid Disease in Pregnancy Workshop

A scientific workshop, "The Impact of Maternal Thyroid Disease on the Developing Fetus: Implications for Diagnosis, Treatment, and Screening" was convened by the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities of the Centers for Disease Control and co-sponsored by the American Thyroid Association. The workshop was held January 12-13 in Atlanta, and drew over 50 experts from around the world. Those in attendance included endocrinologists, pediatricians, obstetricians, neurologists, developmental psychologists, epidemiologists, public health specialists, and toxicologists. The workshop was divided into sessions that outlined the nature and prevalence of thyroid disease in women of reproductive age and during pregnancy, diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease in pregnancy, and the impact of maternal thyroid disease on pregnancy outcomes and child development. Small groups representing the various specialists at the workshop then met to review the current information on the impact of thyroid disease in pregnancy and proposed strategies for prevention, diagnosis and treatment, as well as future research directions. Presentations from the conference will be available on the web in the next few weeks at www.cdc.gov/ncbddd.
