Recently Published Thyroid Research

This Thyroid Digest describing published research studies were prepared by Robert D. Utiger, M.D. from summaries of original research articles. The summaries were published in Clinical Thyroidology (Vol. 15, No. 2, 2003), a publication of the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Utiger is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Thyroidology.

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Antineutrophil and antinuclear antibodies in patients with hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease
  2. Some personality traits and daily hassles predispose patients with Graves' disease to recurrent hyperthyroidism
  3. Prednisone is better therapy than iopanoic acid in amiodarone-induced hyperthyroidism
  4. Fixed doses of radioactive iodine are as effective as thyroid activity- and size-adjusted doses for hyperthyroidism
  5. Neutropenia is a hazard of antithyroid drug therapy in patients with hyperthyroidism

Graves’ Ophthalmopathy

  1. Thyrotropin receptors and proinflammatory cytokines are present in orbital tissue in Graves' eye disease

Hypothyroidism

  1. Serum C-reactive protein and homocysteine concentrations are increased in women with hypothyroidism
  2. Thyroxine therapy increases the pregnancy rate in women with mild thyroid hypofunction

Thyroid Hormone Therapy

  1. Hip fracture is not increased in older women treated with thyroid hormone

Thyroid Cancer

  1. Small papillary thyroid carcinomas grow very slowly
  2. Differentiated thyroid carcinoma can grow rapidly in older patients
  3. Among patients with Hurthle-cell carcinoma, older age and large tumor size predict a poor outcome
  4. Similar outcome in patients with Hurthle-cell carcinoma and follicular carcinoma
  5. The characteristics and course of pure papillary carcinoma and follicular variant of papillary carcinoma are similar
  6. The efficacy of iodine-131 therapy in patients with thyroid carcinoma is increased by a low iodine diet

Thyroiditis

  1. Recurrences and hypothyroidism are rare after recovery in subacute granulomatous thyroiditis

Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

  1. Rising frequency of autoimmune thyroid disease with time in type 1 diabetes mellitus

Nonthyroidal Illness

  1. Administration of leptin minimizes the fasting-induced fall in serum thyrotropin, but not triiodothyronine
  2. Mortality is increased in patients with heart disease who have low serum free triiodothyronine concentrations

Thyroid Development

  1. The left thyroid lobe is absent in thyroid hemiagenesis
